Budgeting is an essential financial tool that helps you create an achievable spending plan for money.
Your budget ensures that you will always have enough money for the things you need, and for the things that are important to you. Following a budget or spending plan will also help keep you out of debt, or help you to clear any existing debt.
We provide you with the tools to budget against categories such as restaurant, clothes/shoes, insurance, education, travel spend etc. This is essential to track how much you are spending so that you can plan on where you want your money to go.
We have a 'My Budgets' insight on your dashboard: add budget limits against categories to track your spend and create savings opportunities.
To set up a new budget follow these steps:
- From the dashboard, scroll down to 'My Budgets'
- Tap ‘Create Budget’ then ‘Setup Budget’
- Select your preferred budget cycle *
- Select a category to set a budget for, e.g. ‘Travel’
- Enter your budget amount, and click Save
To edit an existing budget follow these steps:
- From the dashboard, scroll down to ‘My Budgets’
- Tap ‘View Budgets’
- To update the budget cycle for all of your budgets, select the Settings cog and update the Cycle *
- To update the Budget goal amount, select the Budget and click ‘Edit’ in the top right corner, then change the amount and click Save
* We recommend you align your budget period to your Pay Cycle, this cycle can be Weekly, Fortnightly or Monthly. Weekly and Fortnightly budgets are set to days of the week, so you will need to set this in the first day of the week you need the cycle to commence. As you cannot select a date, you may need to wait until the cycle aligns with your calendar to complete this step.
There’s no question that our bills engine is amazing. But sometimes, it may not automatically detect or capture all of your bills.
- So we’ve given you the power to manually add bills (use it wisely!)
- Select 'Upcoming Bills' from your Dashboard
- Select 'View All'
- Click on + to add a Bill (top right-hand corner of the screen)
- Search by merchant (e.g. Optus)
- Add the bill details
- Amount (you can change the default amount)
- Select a Billing Period - Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly etc.
- Select Next Due Date
- Add any notes to help you recognise the bill
- Press 'Save'
In the Bill Details menu, you can adjust bill details including the category, name and due date. From the Dashboard, open Upcoming Bills then select the Bill you want to edit:
- Bill Name - this is automatically collected from your provider's details within your account, so there are times when it doesn't make sense.
- Amount - if your provider changes the amount due on a scheduled payment you can update it manually here to remind you of the upcoming expense
- Billing Period - select how often you're billed (Annual, Biannual, Fortnightly, Every 4 weeks, Irregular, Monthly, Quarterly, Weekly)
- Next Due date - change the date to any future date
Beyond Bank+ has split how you spend into two buckets 'Living' and 'Lifestyle'. Living expenses are everyday costs necessary to maintain your basic needs and are usually regular ongoing expenses (mortgage, rent, groceries, insurance etc.) Lifestyle expenses are discretionary and can be budgeted to decrease costs without impacting on your basic standard of living (takeaway, entertainment, travel etc).
To view how you spend (by category) follow the steps below:
- Scroll to the 'How you spend' widget on your Dashboard
- Select either 'Living' or 'Lifestyle' from the graph
- Select a category e.g. 'Entertainment' (under Lifestyle) or 'General Insurance' (under Living)
- Select the month to view spending information in each month
To further breakdown your expenses chart, you can select a transaction and add a #Tag to it. Select the transaction then ‘Create a tag’. You can create your own or search for an existing tag from our database.
Beyond Bank+ uses a simple, automatic categorisation engine that evolves and adapts according to personal inputs from our user community, so most of your data will automatically be categorised for you and you won’t need to do a thing.
Every time you categorise a transaction, our intuitive system will apply similar rules to past and future transactions, leaving you with even less work to do!
If you find something you would like to add to a category, or update to a different category:
- On your dashboard scroll down to Recent Transactions and select 'view'
- Select the Transaction you want to categorise
- Or you can search by 'Filter' or Search by typing in the details of the transaction
- Click the arrow next to Bucket - Category to change the category type
- Now select if you want us to remember your categorisation for future transactions
If you're anything like the Beyond Bank+ team, you’ll typically move money around within your accounts.
Examples include moving money from your savings account to pay your credit card, or from your transactions account to pay your home loan. These transfer amounts appear as debits and credits on your bank transactions, meaning it’s all too easy for them to be mistakenly classed as incomes and/or expenses which will throw your budget out!
This is where Beyond Bank+'s Exclude/Hide feature really comes into its own! Exclude a single transaction or choose to exclude all similar ones in one simple swipe – the choice is yours.
Follow these simple steps to exclude duplicated or unwanted transactions:
- On the Account screen select 'See All' recent transactions
- Select the transaction you wish to exclude by pulling the line item to the left.
- This will reveal the 'Exclude' button (Just remember to exclude the transactions on both sides, so they cancel one another out).
- Now decide whether you would like to 'Exclude all Transactions' or 'Only this One' and we'll do the rest!
Beyond Bank+ is a great learner. So once you begin excluding transactions, our intuitive system will start applying the same rules to future ones.
Excluded transactions will not be counted as part of your spend or budget. Instead, they will be held in a separate part of the system, for you to view whenever you like.
Finding transactions just got a whole lot easier, with our new advanced search and filter functionality.
You can now search and filter by category, making it easy to check how much you spent with Woolworths last month, or how much that home renovation actually cost.
This is also a great tool to assist you at end of the financial year in pulling total expenses together for your tax submission, just tag your transactions with #tax2021 or search by date range and select FY 20/21 - we've made it that simple!
- From your dashboard, scroll down to Recent Transactions and select view
- Select how you want to search, select Filter, then:
- Merchant - if you know the merchant name type it in the search bar or scroll and select
- Category - select from popular categories or type into the search bar
- Amount - select 'Any', 'Incoming' or 'Outgoing' and type in the amount range
- Tags - scroll down your personalised #tags and select by clicking on the tick
- Date Range - start and end date or select a preset filter
- Last 14 days
- Last 30 days
- Last 12 months
- FY 20/21
During the transaction syncing process our system is looking for an exact match to either the transaction ID or transaction description.
- When a provider doesn't give us a transaction ID we rely on the description to remain constant to determine if a duplicate transaction has been shared with us
- In the case where the provider changes the transaction description, we keep both records for a period of up to two weeks until we can run further analysis to compare the descriptions.
- The sync process happens multiple times a day, so if the description changes we pull two or more instances of the one transaction
- As an example, the Provider removes additional spacing between words or corrects the description to remove duplicate wording, you will see multiple transactions
What we are doing to limit this occurring?
- We are continuously working on our AI engine to recognise and identify transactions to limit duplications.
- We are also working with our providers to obtain their logic behind transaction descriptions and categorisation so we can match.
What can you do?
- You can choose to ignore the duplications and they will be resolved in 14 days and removed from your transactions lists, this will impact your budget at month end
- You can remove the transaction with the description that looks different, this will be the first transaction usually, with additional spacing or duplicate wording.
- Keep us in the loop when transactions are duplicated so we can improve our AI engine
If the transactions are pending, the good news is that the duplicate will disappear when the real transaction updates. Pending transactions will not apply to your spend or budget, so these will not be affected.
If the duplicate transactions are not pending, check that you haven’t got two accounts showing on your Data Sharing preferences.
To remove an account, please refer to How do I unlink an account?
